This course reviews and applies 'Abdu'l-Baha’s prescriptions for Iranian ‘modernization’ and the advance of civilization in general, to topics of current interest. Through this relatively brief classic of 1875, we will explore: humanity’s moral and spiritual qualities (virtues), the role of religion in social progress and reform, universal education, the development of arts and sciences, appropriate expansion of wealth (or prosperity), consultative governance and justice, the historical interdependence between the West and the Middle East, as well as the necessity of world peace and ever-advancing global civilization. All of these teachings, though directed as written to late nineteenth century, have astoundingly universal application and will reward any sincere investigator.

This course offers a detailed overview of 'Abdu'l-Baha’s table talks from 1904 to 1906 with Laura Clifford Barney. His ‘answered questions’ make an excellent introduction to Baha’i teachings in a format holding special appeal to Western minds. The Will and Testament of 'Abdu'l-Baha

In a letter dated 28 February 1928, Shoghi Effendi, through his secretary writes: "... studying the Will and Testament ... is indispensable for a complete understanding of the spirit, of the mission and of the future state of the Bahá'í Cause." A year later, in his letter to the National Spiritual Assembly of the Bahá'ís of the United States and Canada, dated 27 February 1929, he asserts that "the Will and Testament of 'Abdu'l-Bahá ... together with the Kitáb-i-Aqdas, constitutes the chief depository wherein are enshrined those priceless elements of that Divine Civilization, the establishment of which is the primary mission of the Bahá'í Faith."

The course will explore all the contents of the Master's Will in light of its historical significance as well as the essential provisions it has laid out for the functioning and development of the Bahá'í Administrative Order.
